What is Kahanism?

The Ideology of Jewish Strength, Unity, and Survival

Kahanism is the living ideology of Jewish self-respect, Jewish power, and Jewish survival. It is the unapologetic application of Torah principles to the real world of force, threat, and history. It is the recognition that “Never Again” is not a slogan for memorial candles — it is a command to act, to train, to organize, and to never again allow the Jewish people to stand weak and dependent in the face of those who wish to destroy us.

At its core, Kahanism is the teaching of Rabbi Meir Kahane, zt”l, founder of the original Jewish Defense League in 1968 and later of the Kach movement in Israel. It is not a political party, a personality cult, or a reactionary anger. It is a complete worldview rooted in Ahavat Yisrael (love of every Jew), Jewish pride, physical and spiritual strength, disciplined unity, and unshakeable faith in the eternal destiny of the Jewish people.

JDL 613 exists to revive the original spirit of the Jewish Defense League — the pre-Israel-move JDL of street-level defense, pride, and action — with Torah at the absolute center. We do not dilute it. We do not apologize for it. We live it.

Historical Origins: Rabbi Meir Kahane and the Birth of the JDL

Rabbi Meir David HaKohen Kahane was born in 1932 in Brooklyn to an Orthodox family. He was ordained a rabbi, trained in law and international relations, and saw clearly what the mainstream Jewish establishment refused to confront in the late 1960s: rising antisemitism in American cities, the persecution of Soviet Jewry, and a Jewish community that had internalized passivity and reliance on others.

In 1968 he founded the Jewish Defense League in New York City. Its declared purpose was simple and revolutionary: protect Jews by whatever means necessary. The JDL organized armed self-defense patrols in Jewish neighborhoods under threat, ran self-defense classes, and staged dramatic public actions that forced the world’s attention onto the plight of Soviet Jews. Its most famous slogan — “Every Jew a .22” — was not a call to chaos. It was a demand that the image of the Jew as a weak, bookish victim be buried forever.

The original JDL changed the psychology of a generation of young Jews. It rejected the galut posture of apology and helplessness. It insisted that Jewish blood is not cheap and that Jewish dignity is not negotiable. When Rabbi Kahane made aliyah in 1971, he brought the same principles to Israel through the Kach movement, advocating for Jewish sovereignty, security, and the application of Torah law to the Jewish state. He was assassinated in New York in 1990 by an Arab terrorist. His ideas did not die with him.

Kahanism is the name given to that body of thought: the fusion of deep Jewish particularism, Torah-based self-defense, national pride, and refusal to accept perpetual victimhood.

The Five Pillars of Kahanism

These five principles form the complete foundation. They are not slogans. They are interlocking requirements for Jewish survival and resurgence. The original JDL lived by them. JDL 613 lives by them today.

1. Ahavat Yisrael – Love of Jewry

The first and greatest pillar. Every Jew is family. One people, indivisible, bound by shared history, shared covenant, and shared destiny. It does not matter whether a Jew is Orthodox, traditional, secular, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi, Black, White, convert with proper documentation, or born Jewish. The pain of any Jew is our pain. The defense of any Jewish life is a sacred duty.

This love is not sentimental. It is the reason we organize, train, and act. Kol Yisrael arevim zeh lazeh — all Israel is responsible for one another. In JDL 613 this is expressed as true Brotherhood and Sisterhood: daily concern for members, mutual support, and the absolute rejection of Jewish infighting that weakens us before our enemies.

2. Hadar – Dignity and Pride

Hadar is the armor against self-hatred and external contempt. It is pride in Jewish identity, Jewish history, Jewish Torah, Jewish land, and Jewish strength. The apologetic, timid Jew of the exile is a danger to himself and to the people. We stand tall. We do not hide our identity. We do not beg for acceptance. We do not accept the premise that Jewish existence requires constant justification.

Hadar means knowledge of our heritage and the refusal to cower. It means educating our children to be proud rather than ashamed. It means walking through a hostile campus or street with the bearing of people who know who they are and what they are prepared to defend.

3. Barzel – Iron Strength

Barzel is physical and spiritual fortitude. In a world that often respects only force, Jews cannot rely solely on words, petitions, or appeals to the goodwill of others. Barzel demands that we become capable of defending ourselves and our communities. It includes physical training, martial skills, legal firearms readiness where permitted by law, mental toughness, and the willingness to use strength when necessary to protect Jewish lives and to bury the image of the passive Jew.

This is not a call to illegal violence. JDL 613 condemns illegal acts of violence and operates within the law. It is a call to preparedness, deterrence, and the moral clarity that Jewish blood is not free for the taking. “Every Jew a .22” was the original expression of this principle: capability creates deterrence and changes the way the world treats Jews.

4. Mishmaat – Discipline and Unity

Strength without discipline is chaos. Love without structure is ineffective. Mishmaat is the organizational backbone: clear rules, shared purpose, loyalty to the mission, regular meetings, standards of fitness and readiness, and coordinated action. Individual Jews are vulnerable. Disciplined, united Jews become a force that cannot be ignored.

In JDL 613 this appears in our bylaws, chapter structure, attendance expectations, requirements to pursue legal firearms licensing where possible, physical standards, study of Kahane’s writings, and the absolute prohibition on public disparagement of fellow members. Unity multiplies power.

5. Bitachon – Faith in the Indestructibility of the Jewish People

Bitachon is unwavering trust in Hashem and in the eternal nature of the Jewish people. Am Yisrael Chai is not a hope. It is a divine promise backed by three thousand years of survival against every attempt at destruction. This faith is the spiritual bedrock that sustains action when the night is darkest. It prevents despair and fuels the long view: we act not only for ourselves but for the generations that will come after us.

These five pillars interlock. Love without strength is helplessness. Strength without love becomes cruelty. Discipline without faith becomes empty power. Faith without action is passive. Together they form a complete system.

Core Tenets of Kahanism

Beyond the five pillars, Kahanism includes clear positions that flow directly from them:

- Never Again means we fight back. The Holocaust and every prior catastrophe of Jewish history occurred in environments of Jewish weakness and dependence. Strength and preparedness are the only reliable deterrents.

- Jewish self-defense is a mitzvah. Halakha recognizes the right and often the duty to protect life (pikuach nefesh). “Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor.” The principle of the pursuer (din rodef) exists for a reason.

- Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel. The biblical land belongs to the Jewish people by divine covenant and historical right. Full security and victory for the Jewish state are moral and practical necessities. Territorial concessions that endanger Jewish lives are rejected.

- Rejection of assimilation and reliance on others. Assimilation is demographic and spiritual suicide. Dependence on police, governments, or establishment organizations that have repeatedly failed is dangerous. Self-reliance is required.

- Aggressive intellectual and practical combat against antisemitism. Lies about Jews (Khazar theory, dual loyalty, blood libel, control conspiracies, Holocaust denial, and modern campus and street hatred) must be confronted with facts, exposure, and strength. We do not beg for sympathy. We demand respect through capability.

- Unity of the Jewish people. All committed Jews are welcome. Converts who completed a proper process are Jews. Internal division is a luxury we cannot afford.

Kahanism and Torah

Kahanism is not a secular nationalism. It is Torah applied to the realities of power and survival. The same Torah that commands love of the stranger also commands the defense of the Jewish people. The same tradition that produced the scholar also produced the Maccabees, the Bar Kochba fighters, and the modern IDF. Rabbi Kahane insisted that Jewish law and Jewish power are not in conflict — they are required together. Study of Tanakh, Talmud, and the writings of Kahane himself (including Never Again, The Story of the Jewish Defense League, and his later works) is essential for understanding the system.

Why Kahanism Matters Now

October 7, 2023 and the explosion of antisemitism that followed were not surprises to anyone who understood Kahanism. The establishment response of statements, reliance on authorities, and appeals to a “shared humanity” that many of our enemies explicitly reject has proven inadequate. Jews are attacked on campuses, in streets, and in synagogues. The old methods have failed.

Kahanism answers with a different question: What must we become so that these attacks become too costly for the attacker? The answer is the five pillars lived in real life — organized communities that train, support one another, maintain legal readiness, educate their children in pride, and refuse to accept perpetual vulnerability.

JDL 613: Living Kahanism Today

JDL 613 is the organized expression of this ideology in the post-October 7 era. We are a Brotherhood and Sisterhood open to every committed Jew.

We emphasize:

- Legal self-defense training and readiness

- Chapter structure with clear standards and mutual support

- Torah study with a Kahanist lens

- Media and education that tell the unvarnished truth

- Practical help for Jews in need

- Rejection of illegal violence while affirming the right and duty of self-defense

We do not claim perfection. We claim seriousness. We are building the infrastructure of Jewish strength one chapter, one training session, one disciplined member at a time.

The Path Forward

Kahanism is not for those who prefer comfort or approval. It is for those who understand that Jewish survival has never been guaranteed by the goodwill of the nations and never will be. It is for those who love the Jewish people enough to become strong for them.

Study the writings. Train the body and the mind. Join or form a disciplined structure. Live the five pillars. Teach the next generation that Jewish blood is not cheap and Jewish dignity is not negotiable.

This is Kahanism.
